Porsche 911 GT3
This series of numbers inspires respect: 9-1-1. Not only in the United States does this abbreviation stand for a legend that is also known far beyond the country’s borders. However, we are not talking about heavyweight law enforcement officers here, but about a sports car that made history.
From today’s perspective, it is doubtful that Ferry Porsche was aware of the scope of his design, which he submitted at the end of the 1950s. Together with Erwin Komenda, he was commissioned to design a new Porsche model to replace the ageing 356. The specifications were minimal: wheelbase no longer than 2.20 m, engine and drive should be at the rear. In addition, the model was to convey the feeling of a genuine Porsche at first glance, which was to prove to be a style-defining factor for the company’s cars today.
Once presented as a particularly sporty variant, the GT3 is now a real authority on the world’s racetracks. Although it does not need to hide behind other established sports cars in terms of engine performance, its true strength lies in the curves! And so it comes as no surprise that sports car manufacturers from all over the world repeatedly regard the 911 GT3 as a true reference when it comes to lap times. So what could be better than putting this racing car through its paces on a real race track?
Audi R8 V10
The prestige object, still under the management of Martin Winterkorn, definitely sets standards. Provocatively aggressive looks meet motorsport roots. The result was the fastest and most expensive car in the company’s history. The design of the mid-engine sports car is formed from the Le Mans quattro study and the Audi RSQ, known from the Hollywood movie “I Robot”.
Sales of the Audi R8 started in Germany in April 2007. Initially as a coupé in the 4.2-liter V8 FSI version with an impressive 420 hp and 430 Nm between 4500 and 6000 rpm. An experience that every car enthusiast must have had at least once in their life. Driving an Audi R8 is not just about getting around, it is an unforgettable experience.
The latest generation of the Audi R8 with a V10 engine with over 600 hp borrowed directly from Lamborghini showed all the more that the combustion engine is far from dead…
Ferrari 488 GTB
There are not many sports car brands that have earned a reputation of the caliber of “Ferrari”. With its mostly red super sports cars, the Maranello-based factory is regarded by car enthusiasts as the dream manufacturer par excellence. Driving a Ferrari can only be compared to flying, say connoisseurs and admirers.
The mid-engined weapon included here – the Ferrari 488 GTB – delivers a whopping 670 hp to the crankshaft with its two turbochargers and, at well over 330 km/h, really leaves every driver with sweaty palms…
Lamborghini Huracan
Huracán was a fighting bull of the “Conte de la Patilla” breed, which won over the public in Alicante in 1879 with its fiery and challenging nature.
The direct successor to the Gallardo impresses with its sharp-edged and combative appearance. At first glance, the design looks like a more inconspicuous version of its big brother, the Aventador, but it has no need to hide behind it.
The “base model” Huracan LP 610-4 starts with a 5.2 liter V10 with 610 hp. It reaches a top speed of 325 km/h. With all-wheel drive and Lamborghini’s own LDF dual-clutch gearbox, the Italian work of art storms to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. Incidentally, everything is displayed on a 12.3-inch TFT display, which was designed for the Huracán and is also installed in the new Audi TT. The ANIMA driving mode system is operated from the steering wheel and allows selection of the Strada, Sport and Corsa driving modes. Strada is selected for a driving style that is easy on the discs, Sport for ambitious drivers and Corsa for the crazy ones. Each mode has a different effect on the engine, transmission and chassis.
Mercedes AMG GT-S
Positioned on the market as a direct competitor to the Porsche 911, the AMG GT offers everything it needs to be a bestseller. Armed with 510 hp in the S version and equipped with rear-wheel drive as befits its status. The “Race” mode and the sports exhaust system specially developed by AMG provide an incomparable adrenaline rush.
In 2017, an even more powerful version of the GT-S was launched on the market: The AMG GT-R. More power, less weight. The result: a lap time of 7:10:92 on the Nordschleife. The striking rear end and the seemingly endless hood also make you go weak at the knees.
For all fans of good weather, Mercedes AMG has of course also developed a convertible version. This allows you to enjoy the sound of the roaring V8 even at speeds of 300 km/h.
Corvette Z06
It is the American equivalent of the Porsche 911: a fat V8 beat, planted in a very light chassis and the unmistakable boat tail have always made the hearts of US car lovers beat faster. Since the C7 series, the Corvette has not only been incredibly fast, but has also arrived in Europe in terms of appearance. In the USA, renting a Corvette for a weekend trip is old hat – and now it’s finally here too!
The combination of large-volume V8 engines and rear-wheel drive ensure playful acceleration and lots of driving fun. Of course, the “downsizing” trend has now also arrived overseas, so that the current version also has a comparatively economical V8. For all true fans, however, this will probably be irrelevant, which is why DRIVAR only offers the “original” for hire.
The Z06 is what the 911 GT3 is to Porsche: an uncompromising racetrack racer with plenty of power, but thanks to the perfectly optimized chassis and its low weight, it is also an absolute weapon in corners!
